Trainers from IAA including Derek Wood QC, Paul Stanley QC and Richard Samuel took part in the Advocacy Training Council’s research on advocates working with interpreters. The session was a research day to help formulate guidance for advocates and interpreters on approaches to direct and cross examination.

Bonn, Germany: Richard Samuel conducted a short day’s advocacy training at Bonn University for students of international arbitration. The focus was on showing the common law context in which cross examination developed and playing parlour games with students so they can get to grips with the basics of direct and cross examination.

Zurich, Switzerland: Richard Samuel hosted a panel at a half day ICC YAF conference in which seven international arbitration practitioners from around the world discussed techniques of cross examination appropriate to international arbitration and the influence of their domestic court practice on their approaches to cross examination.

Miami, Florida, US: Richard Samuel was a guest speaker on the Privy Council’s approach to international arbitration on Jan Paulsson’s international arbitration course at Miami University. Richard was also an advocacy trainer alongside US colleagues training practitioners from of various levels from the Carribean.

Nottingham, England. Derek Wood QC and Bernard Richmond QC took part in a conference on the future of advocacy training at Nottingham Trent University.

Milan, Italy. Richard Samuel delivered a lecture on common law advocacy to international arbitration students at Bocconi University. The focus was on showing the political and forensic contexts of advocacy and the common law context in which cross examination developed.

Hong Kong, China. Richard Samuel took part in the Vis Moot East as an arbitrator.

Hong Kong, China. At AIJA’s three-day conference discussing the problems which confront legal practitioners when doing business between East and West, Richard Samuel was part of a panel discussion on differences in advocacy between East and Western countries.

Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. IAA partnered with CIArb UAE to deliver a two-day arbitrator training to six Fellows of CIArb. Frankfurt am Main, Germany: a day of lectures and common law advocacy demonstration on the Masters’ course of Professor Rouven Bodenheimer on mediation of international arbitration disputes at Europa-Universität Viadriana Frankfurt (Oder).
